Recommended or Not?: Applying Supervised Machine Learning Models to Understand UofT Course Evaluations

Su, E., Tosic, L., Wong, K.

[Paper] [GitHub Repo]

Machine learning paper using models such as a multilayer perceptron neural network with Adam optimizer, logistic regression, linear regression, decision tree, and Gaussian Discriminant Analysis, as well as a majority voting ensemble to understand factors influencing whether or not a UofT course gets recommended or not by students.

Street Whisper App

[GitHub Repo]

A command-line app that transcribes and translates audio files into CSV files for interview-heavy research projects across different languages.

Development

The Deadly Historical Heights (Data Story Website)

[Website]

Website informing climbers and the general public about the history of climbing expeditions in the Himalayas, as well as the various factors that impact climbing success and survival.

Exoplanet Classifier (Interactive Data Visualization and Data Analysis)

[GitHub Repo] [Website]

Classified confirmed exoplanets from the NASA Exoplanet Archive using the k-means clustering algorithm, resulting in 3 potential subtypes being identified. Calculated the Safronov number for each exoplanet type to determine its relationship with planetary ejection.

The Last Shining Star (Game)

[Game]

An 8-bit game about struggling with loneliness and a star's last hour with ~790+ views and ~296+ browser plays. 1 out of the 10 games featured in Indiepocalypse Issue #53, a monthly indie game anthology.

Q-SITE Conference 2023 Entanglement Initiative (Interactive Data Visualization)

[Website]

Developed an interactive data visualization in a cross-functional team to group up similar consenting attendees of a quantum conference using text embeddings and applying dimensionality reduction on survey data.

Sheep Jump AI

[GitHub Repo]

An AI that plays a game where sheep—each being a neural network—jump to avoid fences and learns using the genetic algorithm.

Nourpact

[GitHub Repo]

A web app with the goal of reducing food waste by locating nearby food rescues and finding recipes using given food items. Made using React, CSS, and SerpAPI. Hosted on Netlify and created high-fidelity wireframes on Figma. Won 2nd place (college) and best domain name out of 96 projects (with 430+ participants) at SimpliHacks 2.0.

Persephone Hologram

[My Interview]

Persephone is a rainbow hologram portraying the time of Greek mythology's Persephone on Earth and the Underworld and it was created in a team of 2. A master hologram was initially produced with a class 3B green laser to capture the scenes of the flower field and the underworld onto holographic film. Next, the master hologram was used to record our rainbow hologram.

Caution: This project was done after laser safety training using equipment at the University of Toronto. The process was done under the supervision of professionals knowledgeable of lasers.
